Project overview

Project description

This project consists of a new 1.8 to 2.0 metre wide concrete sidewalk along the southeast side of Field Street between Woodroffe Avenue and Major Street, and along the northwest side of Field Street between Major Street and Iris Street in Ward 8. The new sidewalk will connect to the existing sidewalk on the east side of Woodroffe Avenue at Field Street and on the south side of Iris Street at Field Street. The new sidewalk will extend approximately 680 metres in length from Iris Street to Woodroffe Avenue. A pedestrian crossover (PXO) will be added on Field Street at Major Street, and four flat top speed cushions will be added near the pedestrian crossing and St. Daniel School.

The new sidewalk will provide greater walkability in this residential community facilitating access to St. Daniel School. The sidewalk will support pedestrians, including more vulnerable users such as children, seniors, wheelchair users, and persons with vision impairment.

The proposed sidewalk will be installed within the City’s right of way. For much of its length, Field Street will be narrowed to 7.5 metres (about 1 metre less than existing width) to reduce impacts to trees and on adjacent properties while still maintaining on-street parking on one side of the street. The street will be narrowed to 7.0 metres and the sidewalk narrowed to 1.8 metres between 1240 Field Street and Berwick Avenue to protect existing trees at risk. The sidewalk will be further narrowed to 1.5 metres locally at 1212 Field Street to reduce impacts to the driveway.

New stop controls and crosswalks will be added to Berwick Avenue at Field Street and Calder Avenue at Field Street. A new stop control will also be added to Major Street at Field Street. Intersection radii at impacted intersections will be reduced to minimize pedestrian crossing distances. Tactile Walking Surface Indicators will be added at all pedestrian crossings. Landscaping and other features within the right of way may be impacted during construction.
