Project overview

Project description

The objective of the project is to refurbish the entire Hurdman Bridge pump station to bring it up to current City Standards, meet current and future pumping demands, implement a resilient standby power system to protect the system from failure and improve system reliability by increasing water transfer pumping capacity for Zone 2C.

To improve electrical efficiency, an automated and remotely controlled building heating/cooling system will be added. Large diameter valves will be installed outside the station to enhance isolation capabilities. Driveway paving, underground communication and power will be replaced. Security measures will be enhanced. The yard will be restored and re-configured for improved emergency service access including the addition of fire hydrants.

The station, located between Hurdman Transit Station and Riverside Drive, will remain in service while the upgrades are being implemented.

Construction notice (March 2025)

Beginning this spring, the City of Ottawa will start work to upgrade the Hurdman Bridge drinking water pump station in your neighbourhood.

What: Constructed in the early 1970s, the City of Ottawa’s existing Hurdman Bridge pump station has 5 pumps which are used to boost water from Zone 1W to eastern and southern water zones of the City. Due to age, much of the equipment at the pump station is obsolete or at the end of its life cycle.

The existing building will be used for the upgrades and the station will remain in service while the upgrades are being implemented.

Why: The objective of the project is to refurbish the entire Hurdman Bridge pump station to bring it up to current City Standards, meet current and future pumping demands, implement a resilient standby power system to protect the system from failure and improve system reliability by increasing water transfer pumping capacity for the southern water zone.

When: Site preparation, construction trailer, infrastructure locating work is expected to begin by April 2025 with construction activities commencing afterwards. The project will be completed by late 2028.

Where: The station is located between Hurdman Transit Station and Riverside Drive.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the contractor, Louis W Bray Construction Limited, to complete the work.

Traffic management

Vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist traffic will not be impacted. All public areas outside of the construction zone will remain accessible to the public.

The construction area will be fenced off for safety and security reasons for the duration of the works with no access to the public.

Construction disruptions

The contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business, but, as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the work, such as traffic delays, noise and dust. You may also feel vibrations due to heavy equipment operations. Vibrations from construction activities are quite common and rarely cause any problems. We would like to thank you for your patience and co-operation. For construction activity hours of work, the City of Ottawa follows provincial requirements and the City’s Noise By-law (2017-255).
