Project description
The City of Ottawa is undertaking the design and construction work for traffic calming and pedestrian improvement measures along MacFarlane Road. The project’s objective is to implement road safety modifications to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists in the community.
The project includes:
- Implementation of six bus platforms:
- On the northwest and southeast side of the intersection of MacFarlane Road and Briggs Avenue;
- On the northeast and southeast side of the intersection of MacFarlane Road and Brisbane Road;
- On the northeast and southeast side of the intersection of MacFarlane Road and O’Donnell Court.
- Implementation of five sets of speed cushions along MacFarlane Road between Belledune Street and O’Donnell Court.
- Implementation of a median on Deakin Street (eastbound) at MacFarlane Road.
Project timing
Design: completed in May 2024
Construction start: fall 2024
Construction completion: June 2025
Project budget
Approved project funds to date are $1.65 million.
Public engagement
An online survey was undertaken from Monday, November 22 to Friday, December 10, 2021, to confirm support for this study and to gather public feedback on traffic concerns and level of support for potential measures along MacFarlane Road. The majority of the survey respondents supported traffic calming and the presented potential measures.
A second online survey was undertaken from Sunday, August 7 to Sunday, August 28, 2022, to present the recommended plan to residents and to gather public feedback on the recommended plan.

Construction notice (August 2024)
Beginning in early September, the City of Ottawa will start the implementation of traffic calming measures in your neighbourhood.
What: The City of Ottawa will be implementing traffic calming measures along MacFarlane Road. The work entails the implementation of five speed cushions, six bus platforms, as well as a concrete median cap on Deakin Street (eastbound) at MacFarlane Road.
Why: The measures will facilitate traffic calming along the roadway, enabling safety for all roadway users.
When: Construction is expected to begin in early September and will be completed in October 2024.
Where: The works will be along MacFarlane Road, between Briggs Avenue and Deakin Street.
Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the contractor, Brenning Construction (1986) Ltd., to complete the work.

Traffic management
Construction activities will require occasional closures of traffic lanes. The contractor will ensure that traffic flow will be maintained. On occasion, traffic will be reduced to a single lane with flag persons to direct traffic though the construction zone. Outside working hours, both directions of traffic will be maintained. Cyclists will be required to merge with traffic and take a lane.
Construction disruptions
The Contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business, but, as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the work, such as traffic delays, noise and dust. You may also feel vibrations due to heavy equipment operations. Vibrations from construction activities are quite common and rarely cause any problems. We would like to thank you for your patience and co-operation.
For construction activity hours of work, the City of Ottawa follows provincial requirements and the City’s Noise By-law (2017-255).
