Project overview

Project description

Mooney’s Bay Sanitary Sewer Collector (MBC) is part of the wastewater collection system servicing central and south Ottawa. Approximately 7.5 kilometers long, the sewer is collecting wastewater all the way from the neighbourhoods west of Prince of Wales/Fisher intersection (Parkwood Hills, Fisher Glen, Carleton Heights, etc.) to the Bayview area west of the O-Train / Trillium Line corridor (Central Park and Hintonburg neighbourhoods).

At the downstream end, the section of the MBC located just north of the Somerset Street West railway overpass, starting at the Hintonburg Place corner (just west of Bayswater intersection), then crossing the rail tracks to the east side, was identified for replacement.

The project was initiated in 2018, and due to external constraints in the same area, most notably the LRT Phase 2 design and construction and O-Train Trillium Line, construction was split into 3 phases:

  • Phase 1 crossing of the Trillium Line tracks.
  • Phase 2 downstream connection – work east of the train tracks.
  • Phase 3 connection to the existing MBC on Hintonburg Place – work west of the train tracks.

The first two phases have been completed, while phase 3 was delayed due to work on the Trillium Line. The Trillium Line was scheduled for completion in the fall of 2024, hence the reinitiation of this project, with the construction of phase 3 in 2025.

Project timing

Design: September 2024 to April 2025
Construction start: summer 2025
Construction completion: fall 2025

Project budget

Approved project funds to date are $4.352 million. Budget will be adjusted once the design is completed and prior to the construction start date.
