Home Support Services

Home Support Services provide help with light housekeeping to eligible low-income residents who have a medical need and who have little or no supports in the community. Light housekeeping may include:  floors, bathrooms, laundry, kitchen and light dusting.

Who can get Home Support Services?

  • Your income must be below the “low income cut-off” or you are in receipt of social assistance
  • You have a documented medical reason that prevents you from doing homemaking tasks on your own
  • You have little or no support to help you with housekeeping tasks. For example, you live alone and have no family close by

Call 3-1-1 between 8:45 am and 4 pm

  • Select 1 for service in English or 2 for service in French
  • Select 4 for Social Services

Eligibility will be assessed during a telephone interview followed with a home visit by a case worker.

Funeral and burial

Financial assistance is available for cremation and burial costs for:

  • Individuals who were in receipt of social assistance at the time of their death
  • Low-income residents who were receiving, or would have been eligible to receive, assistance under the City's Essential Health and Social Supports (EHSS) program

Family members must apply for financial assistance prior to signing a contract with a funeral home. Social Services staff will review the financial circumstances of the deceased to determine if help with cremation and/or burial costs is possible. Funeral homes will explain what services are covered by Social Services.

Catherine Street Community Service Hub

The Catherine Street Community Service Hub, located at 370 Catherine Street, is a safe resting space where residents can access City and community social supports in one location. The hub offers services by a team of Employment and Social Services and community partner agency staff.  The hub is open from Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

    • Ontario Disability Support Program
    • Essential Health and Social Supports Program
    • Child care fee subsidy
  • Housing support and referrals
  • Employment services (Employment Ontario)
