In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Ottawa Paramedic Service is unable to permit public access to our facility. Effective immediately, all courses held at Paramedic Headquarters have been cancelled.

Each year, about 13,000 Canadians die as a result of injuries – accounting for more years of life lost than cancer, heart disease and stroke combined.

Standard First Aid, CPR C and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Certification

Introduces participants to the basic functions of CPR by covering all major topics, such as: chocking, airway and breathing emergencies, and prevention of disease transmission. This course is suitable for first responder in the workplace.

This course does not meet the prerequisite for the National Lifeguard Service (NLS) course.

Duration: Two Days (16 hours) 

Certification: First Aid and CPR valid for three years

Recertification allows participants to practice and review skills, as well as learn new standards in first aid. 

Note: 

This course is only available for individuals that currently have a Standard First Aid certification that is still valid. Proof of a valid Standard First Aid Certification (2-days) must be presented at the beginning of the course. Students unable to provide a current certification at the time of the course will not be permitted to attend. A certification is only deemed to be valid if the expiration date on the card has not passed.  If your certification has expired you must take the full two day standard first aid course.

Duration: Eight hours

Designed to give participants a general overview of first aid by teaching you how to think and react in an emergency until medical help arrives. This course is suitable for those who are working as first responders in their workplace.

Duration: One Day (eight hours) 

Certification: Emergency First Aid and CPR valid for three years.

This course teaches participants how to administer CPR to adults, children and infants. It also covers topics such as, choking and the use of an AED.

Duration: Half Day (four hours)

Certification: Valid for one year

This course teaches participants basic functions in CPR, treatment of a conscious and unconscious adult choking victim, as well as heart attack and stroke.

Duration: Three Hours

This course teaches participants how to maintain the patient’s airway and advanced airway techniques.

Duration: Half Day (four hours)

Certification: Valid for two years

  • Use of Bag Valve Mask (BVM), pocket mask, face shield and non-rebreathing mask
  • Use of supplemental oxygen in a first aid environment
  • Changing and storing oxygen cylinders

  • Artificial Respiration (rescue breathing)
  • Assisted Respiration
  • Complications of oxygen administration
  • Paediatric oxygen administration

Health Care Provider (HCP) CPR C and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Certification

This course is geared for participants that work in the health care industry. It covers Advanced CPR and choking procedure techniques for adults, children and infants.

Duration: Half Day (four hours)

Certification: Valid for one year

    • A patient found unresponsive
    • Witnessed cardiac arrest

First Aid, CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Instructor

This course is designed for individuals who have a strong grasp of first aid and would like to become certified as first aid instructors. Upon successful course completion instructors would be certified to teach:

  • Standard, Emergency and Basic First Aid
  • CPR A, B and C
  • Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

Duration:

  • Instructor Course: 18 hours
  • Co-Teach (14 hours): Instructor candidates are required to co-teach a 2-day Standard First Aid course with a certified Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Instructor. This co-teach must be scheduled within six months of the Instructor Course date. Co-teaches are scheduled by the instructor-candidate as per course availability. Instructor candidates are responsible for teaching selected items as well as aid in participant evaluations, course set-up, takedown, etc.
  • Audit (14 hours): Candidates successful in the co-teach must then teach an audited 2-day Standard First Aid, CPR C and AED Course. The audit must be scheduled within six months of the Instructor Course date. Audits will take place during regularly scheduled Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Courses, and an audit fee will be applied to any private courses (non-Ottawa Paramedic Service scheduled courses). A certified Ottawa Paramedic Service Instructor-Trainer will conduct this audit. Upon successful completion, the instructor candidate will be a certified Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Instructor.

 Prerequisites

  • 18 years of age
  • Ottawa Paramedic Service Standard First Aid, CPR C “Basic Rescuer” and AED Certification

Standard First Aid, CPR C and AED Instructor Cross-Over Clinic

This course is designed for individuals who hold a current First Aid and CPR Instructor Certification with another agency (Red Cross, St-John's, Lifesaving Society, etc.) and would like to become certified as an Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Instructor. Upon successful course completion instructors will be certified to teach:

  • Standard, Emergency and Basic First Aid
  • CPR A, B and C
  • Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

Duration:

  • Instructor Cross-Over Course: 4 hours After taking the cross-over clinic, candidates would have to complete the following before they become certified as an instructor:
  • Co-Teach (14 hours): Instructor candidates are required to co-teach a two-day Standard First Aid course with a certified Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Instructor. This co-teach must be scheduled within six months of the Instructor Course date. Co-teaches are scheduled by the instructor-candidate as per course availability. Instructor candidates are responsible for teaching selected items as well as aid in participant evaluations, course set-up, takedown, etc.
  • Audit (14 hours): Candidates successful in the co-teach must then teach an audited two-day Standard First Aid, CPR C and AED Course. Material: All necessary materials will be provided. All participants will leave the course with an instructor package that includes all first aid supplies required to demonstrate all items in the course.

Course Work: Participants will be issued a pre-course package that contains readings and assignments that must be completed before the beginning of the course.

Standard First Aid with CPR C & AED Certification

This is a comprehensive two-day first aid course covering all major topics. The course is suitable for people looking for a solid foundation in first aid, people employed in a workplace of greater than 5 people, security guards, fire and police program applicants and anyone working with children.

This course is approved by WSIB for workplace first aid requirements and teaches the latest CPR guidelines.

This course does not meet the prerequisite for the National Lifeguard Service (NLS) course.

Duration: Two Days (16 hours)

Standard First Aid with CPR C & AED Recertification

The recertification is intended for individuals holding a valid Standard First Aid Certification (2-days) needing to recertify. A certification is only deemed to be valid if the expiration date on the card has not passed. Students with an expired certification, must take the full 2-day Standard First Aid Certification (link brings you to Standard First Aid). In addition, students who took the recertification course the previous time, must take the full 2-day Standard First Aid Certification course again instead (this will be indicated on the first aid certificate).

In order to attend the course, students must provide proof of a valid certification at the beginning of the course. Students unable to provide a valid certification at the time of the course will not be permitted to attend.

This course is approved by WSIB for workplace first aid requirements and teaches the latest CPR guidelines.

Duration: Eight hours

CPR C & AED

This course teaches participants how to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies. Students will learn to administer CPR to adults, children and infants as well as choking procedures and the use of an AED. This course is suitable for the lay public needing a CPR C/AED certification.

Oxygen Therapy and Airway Management

This course teaches students when and how to correctly administer supplemental oxygen to a patient using various delivery devices. Students will also learn how to maintain the patient’s airway, administer suction, oral airways, advanced airway techniques and how to properly assemble and handle oxygen equipment

First Aid, CPR C & AED Instructor

Upon successful course completion instructors will be certified to teach:

Duration

  • Instructor Course: 14 hours – split over two sequential weeks
  • Monitor (14 hours): Instructor candidates must attend an Ottawa Paramedic Service Standard First Aid with CPR C and AED course and watch an Ottawa Paramedic Service instructor teach. The instructor-candidate is to watch how the instructor teaches the course, paying special attention to timing, flow, material delivery, and teaching styles
  • Co-Teach (14 hours): Instructor-candidates are required to co-teach a 2-day Standard First Aid course with a certified Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Instructor. This co-teach must be scheduled within six months of the Instructor Course date. Instructor candidates are responsible for teaching selected items as well as assisting in participant evaluations, course set-up, takedown, etc.
  • Audit (14 hours): Candidates successful in the co-teach must then teach a 2-day Standard First Aid, CPR C and AED Course – within 6 months of the initial Instructor Course date. Instructor-candidates are responsible for the delivery of the entire course – including class set-up, take-down, presentation and participant evaluations. The instructor-candidate will be audited by an Ottawa Paramedic Service first aid instructor. Audits will take place during regularly scheduled Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Courses. Upon successful completion, the instructor candidate will be a certified Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Instructor.
