COVID-19 and First aid and CPR courses
The Ottawa Paramedic Service is able to continue offering first aid and CPR courses as Health and Safety trainings are deemed essential services in the Reopening Ontario Act - O. Reg. 82/20.
All courses include the following modifications:
- All participants completing a COVID-19 self-assessment upon arrival
- Enforcing 2-meter physical distancing, except when required
- Providing gloves and requiring masks when physical distancing is not possible
- Using personally issued bandages and equipment
- Enhanced cleaning protocols

Standard First Aid with CPR C & AED Certification
This is a comprehensive two-day first aid course covering all major topics. The course is suitable for people looking for a solid foundation in first aid, people employed in a workplace of greater than 5 people, security guards, fire and police program applicants and anyone working with children.
This course is approved by WSIB for workplace first aid requirements and teaches the latest CPR guidelines.
This course is a certified first aid prerequisite for those wishing to register in LSS National Lifeguard Service.
Duration: Two Days (16 hours)
Cost: $140.45+ tax ($158.70)

Standard First Aid with CPR C & AED Recertification
This recertification is intended for individuals holding a valid Standard First Aid Certification (2-days) needing to recertify. A certification is only deemed to be valid if the expiration date on the card has not passed. Students with an expired certification, must take the full 2-day Standard First Aid Certification (link brings you to Standard First Aid). In addition, students who took the recertification course the previous time, must take the full 2-day Standard First Aid Certification course again instead (this will be indicated on the first aid certificate).
In order to attend the course, students must provide proof of a valid certification at the beginning of the course. Students unable to provide a valid certification at the time of the course will not be permitted to attend.

Emergency First Aid with CPR C & AED Certification
This course is designed to provide participants with a general overview of first aid. This course is suitable for those working in small workplaces of less than 5 employees, parents and individuals looking for a general level of first aid for personal reasons.
This course is approved by WSIB for workplace first aid requirements and teaches the latest CPR guidelines.

CPR C & AED
This course teaches participants how to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies. Students will learn to administer CPR to adults, children and infants as well as choking procedures and the use of an AED. This course is suitable for the lay public needing a CPR C/AED certification.

Basic Life Support (BLS) – formerly Health Care Provider CPR C & AED
This course is designed for participants that work in the health care setting (nurses, sports medicine medical and dental professionals) and other targeted responders such as; fire services, lifeguard or response team. It covers the health care provider standards of CPR for adults, children and infants as well as choking procedures and AED.
Duration: Half Day (four hours)

Oxygen Therapy and Airway Management
This course teaches students when and how to correctly administer supplemental oxygen to a patient using various delivery devices. Students will also learn how to maintain the patient’s airway, administer suction, oral airways, advanced airway techniques and how to properly assemble and handle oxygen equipment

First Aid, CPR C & AED Instructor
This course is designed for individuals who have a strong grasp of first aid and would like to become certified to teach first aid and CPR. Individuals wishing to take this course should be:
- Comfortable speaking to groups
- Dynamic and energetic
- Clear and confidently speakers
- Confident in their first aid skills
Upon successful course completion instructors will be certified to teach:
- Standard, Emergency and Basic First Aid
- CPR A and C
- Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
Duration
- Instructor Course: 14 hours – split over two sequential weeks
- Monitor (14 hours): Instructor candidates must attend an Ottawa Paramedic Service Standard First Aid with CPR C and AED course and watch an Ottawa Paramedic Service instructor teach. The instructor-candidate is to watch how the instructor teaches the course, paying special attention to timing, flow, material delivery, and teaching styles
- Co-Teach (14 hours): Instructor-candidates are required to co-teach a 2-day Standard First Aid course with a certified Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Instructor. This co-teach must be scheduled within six months of the Instructor Course date. Instructor candidates are responsible for teaching selected items as well as assisting in participant evaluations, course set-up, takedown, etc.
- Audit (14 hours): Candidates successful in the co-teach must then teach a 2-day Standard First Aid, CPR C and AED Course – within 6 months of the initial Instructor Course date. Instructor-candidates are responsible for the delivery of the entire course – including class set-up, take-down, presentation and participant evaluations. The instructor-candidate will be audited by an Ottawa Paramedic Service first aid instructor. Audits will take place during regularly scheduled Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Courses. Upon successful completion, the instructor candidate will be a certified Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Instructor.
Cost: $230.09 + tax ($260)

This course is designed for individuals who hold a current First Aid and CPR Instructor Certification with another agency (Red Cross, St-John's, Lifesaving Society, etc.) and would like to become certified as an Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Instructor. This course is designed for individuals who have a strong grasp of first aid and would like to become certified to teach first aid and CPR. Individuals wishing to take this course should be:
- Comfortable speaking to groups
- Dynamic and energetic
- Clear and confidently speakers
- Confident in their first aid skills
Upon successful course completion instructors will be certified to teach:
- Standard, Emergency and Basic First Aid
- CPR A and C
- Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
Duration:
- Instructor Cross-Over Course (4 hours): Content focus’ on the differences and specifics of teaching first aid with the Ottawa Paramedic Service.
- Co-Teach (14 hours): Instructor-candidates are required to co-teach a 2-day Standard First Aid course with a certified Ottawa Paramedic Service First Aid Instructor within 6 months of the initial Cross-Over Course date. This co-teach must be scheduled within six months of the Instructor Course date.
