Path to become a lifeguard and swim instructor
- Bronze Star *optional (10-12 years)
- Bronze Medallion / Emergency First Aid with CPR ‘B’ (13 years)
- Bronze Cross (14 years)
- Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ / AED (12 years)
- Airway Management or Oxygen Therapy (O2) (15 years)
- National Lifeguard (15 years)
- Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor (see note below)
Minimum age: You can now apply for a lifeguard job at 15 years of age if you have all the certifications.
Note: Red Cross-Certified Individuals should follow the Lifesaving Society’s instructions to complete Swim Transition Pathways for Red Cross-Certified Individuals by June 30, 2023.

Lifeguard / Instructor (pools)
Lifeguards monitor pools and beaches to prevent accidents by enforcing rules and procedures. They also work as a team to perform rescues and provide first aid when needed.

Waterfront Lifeguard (beaches)

Wading Pool Attendant
Wading Pool Attendants manage the daily operation of the wading pool program in the City's parks.
- Qualifications:
- Must be 15 years of age by June 1
- Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ / AED

- Recommended Bronze Cross or National Lifeguard (NL)
Aquafitness Instructor
Aquafitness Instructors lead exercise classes in the water, ensuring the sessions are safe and enjoyable. They follow the rules set by their certification agency as well as company and department policies.
- Qualifications
- Aquafitness Instructor certificate (CALA, YM-YWCA, WaterART or other recognized certification)
