Demonstrations and marches on the City Right-of-Way
The City of Ottawa recognizes the fundamental rights under Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms as exercised through the freedom of peaceful assembly.
Participants in a demonstration or march are still subject to all laws and by-laws. Tickets will be issued to any individual in violation of any City of Ottawa By-law. An overview of your rights in a protest, march or demonstration is available on the Ottawa Police website.
Demonstrations can be stationary (confined to a specific location) or move from one point to another (commonly referred to as a “march”). Demonstrations and marches on the City Right-of-Way (includes sidewalks), are subject to the conditions outlined in the Special Events on City Streets By-law (no. 2001-260).
