The City is pleased to announce that the cycling and pedestrian facilities constructed through the Bay Street cycling facility project have been completed.

This $6.2 million project included the replacement of the existing storm and sanitary sewer and watermain at the intersection of Bay and Albert streets. This project also included an upgrade to the existing northbound bike lane on Bay Street, between Laurier Avenue and Wellington Street with the construction of a new northbound cycle track on the east side of the roadway. A new southbound cycle track on the west side of the roadway was constructed from Laurier Avenue to Wellington Street.

Advanced construction work began in summer 2019 with utility relocation and the project was completed in summer 2021.

The majority of the concrete sidewalks and underground work were completed in 2020 with the remaining concrete, asphalt and landscaping restoration completed in summer 2021. Cycling facilities are also now operational.

Rideau Street and William Street renewal

The City of Ottawa has completed the construction of the renewal of Rideau Street, from Sussex Drive to Dalhousie Street. The project involved the reconstruction of the streetscape elements and transportation components within the Rideau Street right of way. This project also included the renewal of a portion of William Street, between George Street and Rideau Street, which is a pedestrian street.

The streetscaping strategy for the $13.5 million project is reflective of the historic nature of the corridor, but also incorporates contemporary elements to ensure a timeless design. The design includes an integrated family of streetscaping elements that are in keeping with the renewed portion of Rideau Street east of Dalhousie. These elements include benches, waste receptacles, pedestrian lighting, bicycle parking, bollards, street trees, special effects (FX) poles, and pavers.

Construction on Rideau Street from Dalhousie Street to Sussex Drive commenced in April 2020. Rideau Street reopened to traffic, transit and cyclists on December 19, 2020. Installation of new streetlight poles, triple stream waste and recycling units, FX poles and catenary lighting, as well as minor landscaping and deficiency work were completed in spring 2021.

Construction on William Street commenced in September 2020. William Street reopened to pedestrians on December 19, 2020. Remaining work on William Street was completed in spring 2021.
