Design Study for Aqueduct Park – Environmental Site Assessment

In August 2024, the City of Ottawa will undertake an environmental site assessment (ESA) within your community on the south side of Lett Street. The ESA is required as a preliminary study to support the design and construction of a future park in this area.

Where: The ESA will occur around 324 Lett Street which is just east of Pimisi Station - between Lett Street, Albert Street and Booth Street.

What: The ESA will involve drilling boreholes and installing monitoring wells to collect soil and groundwater samples for testing. Due to various buried utilities and the aqueduct infrastructure which are present in this area, a hydrovac truck will be used to daylight some of the boreholes in close proximity to buried infrastructure. Some of the boreholes will be completed in close proximity to the existing multi-use pathway (MUP) and will therefore necessitate temporary closures of the MUP for portions of the work.

Why: The ESA is required to support the design of a future park at this location, and for meeting the regulatory requirements to redevelop these lands into a municipal park.

When: The borehole drilling activities are scheduled to take place from August 12 to 19, 2024. The temporary MUP closure should be more limited, anticipated from August 12 through 14 between the hours of 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained Stantec Consulting and their sub-contractors (Strata Soil Sampling and Badger Daylighting) to undertake the ESA for this project.

Map outlining the work area and temporary multi use pathway closure for Aqueduct Park

Temporary Closure to Multi-Use Pathway

  • Portions of the MUP will be temporarily closed based on the location of some of the required boreholes, where it would not be safe to have daylighting and/or drilling equipment working in such close proximity to the active pathways.
  • The segment of the MUP that will be subject to temporary closure is shown in image below. Signage will be posted at advanced locations leading into this segment to notify bikers and pedestrians of the temporary closures.
  • In an effort to minimize the impact during the major commuting hours, the temporary closure of the MUP will be limited between the hours of 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

Nightly lane reductions & Noise By-law exemption: Colonel By Drive at Hawthorne Avenue (June 23 to 28, 2024)

The City of Ottawa’s ongoing Greenfield-Main-Hawthorne et al. Reconstruction Project will begin the traffic signal / streetlight duct installation as part of the reconstruction of the Colonel By Drive and Hawthorne Avenue intersection next week. To facilitate this work, the City of Ottawa has approved overnight lane reductions on Colonel By Drive approaching Hawthorne Avenue and a Noise By-law Exemption to permit the work.

Information for this project can be found at ottawa.ca/gmhreconstruction.

What: Overnight work will require lane reductions in both directions on Colonel By Drive at the Hawthorne Avenue intersection. Existing lane reductions on Hawthorne Avenue between Main Street and Colonel By Drive remain in place. A minimum of one lane will remain open in each direction during the course of this overnight work. Police will be on site to direct traffic.

Why: These lane reductions are required for the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and construction workers, as there is limited area to accommodate electrical duct installation and roadway reconstruction.

When: 7:30 pm to 6 am nightly, beginning Sunday, June 23 and ending at 6 am on Friday, June 28. Beginning Sunday evening, Colonel By Drive will be reduced nightly to one lane to accommodate active work, with police controlling the intersection. This nightly lane reduction is expected to last until 6 am on Friday, June 28, weather and schedule permitting.

In support of this work, a Noise By-law Exemption has been granted. All work will be carried out in accordance with by-law regulations.

Where: Colonel By Drive and Hawthorne Avenue intersection

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the contractor, Green Infrastructure Partners Inc. (GIP), to complete the work.

Construction disruptions

Green Infrastructure Partners Inc (GIP), will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business, but as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the operation of the work, such as delays when travelling through the construction zone, noise and dust. You may also feel vibrations due to heavy equipment operations. Vibrations from construction activities are quite common and rarely cause any problems. We would like to thank you in advance for your patience and co-operation.

For construction activity hours of work, the City of Ottawa follows provincial requirements and the City’s Noise By-law (2017-255).  A Noise By-law Exemption has been granted for this overnight work. GIP has committed to try and limit noisier operations to before 10 pm, where possible.

Traffic impacts

Colonel By Drive will be reduced to a minimum of one lane open through the intersection each night to permit construction activities within the intersection. Hawthorne Avenue lane reductions remain in place. Police will be directing traffic. Please watch for signs and flagging.

2023 Sidewalk repairs – city wide: Ridgewood Avenue

As part of the City of Ottawa’s annual infrastructure maintenance cycle, sidewalk repairs will begin in August and continue until late November 2024.

What: Work will involve localized repairs of existing concrete sidewalk facilities and may also include, catch basin, and iron adjustments as required. Increased noise levels are to be expected to facilitate the work.

Why: The City of Ottawa will be repairing concrete sidewalks, with the objective of improving the City’s existing sidewalk network for pedestrians.

When: This work is expected to start in August and completion is anticipated by late November 2024.

The sidewalk repair works will occur during the day and evening and will involve localized pedestrian detours and potential minor lane interruptions.

WhereNon-continuous (localized) concrete sidewalk repairs will occur on Ridgewood Avenue between Riverside Drive and Springland Drive.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the contractor, Les Parisien Construction LTD, to complete the work.

If you have a subsurface lawn irrigation system, please notify the City’s Project Manager identified below. We encourage residents to contact the undersigned to identify and confirm that private irrigations systems have been disconnected or relocated. Damage may occur should you choose not to relocate prior to our arrival.

On-street parking

As the various road reconstruction activities are in progress on your street, on-street parking may be restricted. In the event that access to your driveway will be impacted, you will receive 24-hours’ notice and provided with a Temporary On-Street Parking Permit (orange form) to permit on-street parking within two blocks of your residence. Residents with electric vehicles will need to find alternative charging arrangements when access is restricted. The use of extension cords within the public right of way is not permitted.

Should you have additional concerns about reduced access, such as business deliveries or accessibility requirements, please contact the project manager listed below.

Traffic management

To accommodate the proposed construction, various sidewalk closures, pedestrian detours, lane reductions, alternating traffic and/or detours can be expected. Access to local businesses and private properties will be maintained throughout the construction period. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained with proper detours in place where applicable.

Construction disruptions

The contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the normal life of your family and/or operation of your business, but as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during construction. We would like to thank you in advance for your patience and co-operation. For construction activity hours of work, the City of Ottawa follows provincial requirements and the City’s Noise By-law (2017-255).
