Project description

The objective of this project is to complete the design and construction for the renewal of the aging sanitary sewers, watermains and storm sewers (specifically the CSP sewers) in Arnhem Street and Apeldoorn Avenue. The project will include full road reconstruction including the addition of traffic calming features.   

The project limits include:    

  • Arnhem Street, from Greenbriar Avenue to Normandy Crescent
  • Apeldoorn Avenue, from Meadowlands Drive to Falaise Road

Approved project funds to date are $1,600,000.

Public information session (June 18 to July 2, 2024)

The City of Ottawa held a public information session on June 18, 2024, to discuss the proposed infrastructure improvement project in your neighbourhood.

Through this session, the City of Ottawa presented the preliminary design drawings related to the Integrated Renewal of Arnhem Street and Apeldoorn Avenue project. Staff were present to provide information and receive comments.

Project summary

What: The project involves watermain and sewer replacement, road reconstruction and the addition of traffic calming features.

Why: The objective of this project is to rehabilitate underground and roadway infrastructure that is nearing the end of its lifespan.

When: Construction is planned to start late spring 2025 (pending budget approval) and be completed by spring 2026.

Where: Arnhem Street between Greenbriar Avenue and Normandy Crescent and Apeldoorn Avenue between Meadowlands Drive and Falaise Road.

Who: The work is being managed by City of Ottawa Infrastructure Services and the engineering consulting firm, Parsons Inc., has been retained to complete the design.

Additional field investigations notice (June 2024)

The City of Ottawa will undertake hydrovac excavation investigations in your neighbourhood. This work is being done to locate existing Enbridge gas mains as part of the design phase of the Integrated Renewal of Arnhem Street and Apeldoorn Avenue project.

What: The investigation work will involve hydrovac excavation to locate Enbridge gas mains at select locations. The work will confirm the horizontal and vertical location of the gas mains to inform the ongoing design. The excavations will be reinstated. The investigations will be done by workers and equipment, as needed. Parking lanes will be temporarily closed during the work.

Why: This work supports the Arnhem Street and Apeldoorn Avenue preliminary and detailed designs. 

When: The field investigation work will commence in July 2024 and could take up to two days. The work will be conducted between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday. 

Where: At localized spots along Arnhem Street between Greenbriar Avenue and Normandy Crescent as well as on Apeldoorn Avenue between Meadowlands Drive and Falaise Road. 

Who: Parsons Inc. and their sub-consultants, Badger Daylighting and J.D. Barnes Limited, will coordinate the work for the City of Ottawa.

On-street parking

As the various road reconstruction activities are in progress on your street, on-street parking may be restricted. In the event that access to your driveway will be impacted, you will receive 24-hours’ notice and provided with a Temporary On-Street Parking Permit (orange form) to permit on-street parking within two blocks of your residence. Residents with electric vehicles will need to find alternative charging arrangements when access is restricted. The use of extension cords within the public right of way is not permitted. Should you have additional concerns about reduced access, such as business deliveries or accessibility requirements, please contact the project manager.

Field investigations notice (March 2023)

The City of Ottawa will undertake geotechnical, hydrogeological and environmental investigations in your neighborhood. This work is being done to determine soil, bedrock and groundwater conditions as part of the design phase of the Integrated Renewal of Arnhem Street and Apeldoorn Avenue.

What: The investigation work will involve the drilling of boreholes, obtaining soil and water samples for testing to determine future construction methods and the locations for underground utilities. The investigations will be done by workers and equipment, as needed. Parking lanes will be temporarily closed during the work.

Why: This work supports the Arnhem Street and Apeldoorn Avenue preliminary and detailed designs.

When: The field investigation work will commence in April/May 2023 and could take up to four (4) weeks. The work will be conducted between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

Where: At localized spots along Arnhem Street between Greenbriar Avenue and Normandy Crescent as well as on Apeldoorn Avenue between Meadowlands Drive and Falaise Road.

Who: Parsons Inc. and their sub-consultants, Thurber Engineering Ltd., will coordinate the work for the City of Ottawa.

On-street parking

The Contractor is obligated to provide 24hr notification of temporary loss of access/egress. In the event that access to your driveway is restricted due to construction activities, a Temporary On-Street Parking Permit (orange form) will be distributed to permit on-street parking within two blocks of your residence.
